The opposition claims the Budget proposal presented to seize over Rs.8 billion funds belonging to the Perpetual Treasuries Limited is another attempt by the government to deceive the public.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said the relevant funds must only be transferred to the Treasury in accordance with a court order.
The Parliamentarian said the government will have to deal with unnecessary complications if the Perpetual Treasuries Limited goes to court challenging the proposal of the Minister of Finance.
The Parliamentarian said the proposal to seize the funds was not relevant to the Budget.
He said over Rs. 10-11 billion belonging to the Perpetual Treasuries Limited had been frozen by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
The MP said the matter will drag on for at least a decade when the firm files cases over the funds.
MP Wickramaratne raised concerns whether the Perpetual Treasuries Limited had secret dealings with the present administration.
He questioned the government as to the delay in taking legal action against wrongdoers even after two years have lapsed since President Gotabaya Rajapaksa came into power.
