COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Ministry of Agriculture has indicated that it will not import eggs next year and has effectively abandoned the plans to import chicken meat as well.
The development comes as local producers have agreed to reduce the prices of chicken while the production has also picked up.
Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando previously mooted plans to import chicken meat considering the high prices. However, local producers have now agreed on two occasions to slash prices.
The Agriculture Minister said due to the high prices of eggs and chicken, more people are now drawn into the industry than before.
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera has also noted that due to the increase in production, the prices of eggs and poultry will come down in the next few months.
Eggs are still being imported from India due to the shortage but the Ministry is expected to discontinue it at the start of next year.
