A decision has been reached to expedite genome sequencing to identify persons infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country.
Speaking to the BBC, Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the Sri Jayawardenepura University Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said the Ministry of Health has issued necessary guidelines in this regard.
He noted the new variant can be detected from PCR tests.
Meanwhile, the Health Promotion Bureau said the number of COVID related fatalities have clearly reduced in line with infections, in countries with high vaccination rates.
Reports state hospitalizations due to COVID-19 reduce by 84 percent, for persons who are fully vaccinated.
