COLOMBO (NewsRadio); A gazette extraordinary has been issued declaring the removal of the Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana.
The gazette issued by the Governor of the North Western Province, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda states Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana the Mayor of the Municipal Council Kurunegala should be deemed to have resigned from his office with effect from the 31st of December 2022, and, the post of Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council shall be considered as vacant.
The Governor has issued the directives after the budget document for the year 2023 which was presented by the Mayor of Kurunegala was not passed in the council in terms of Municipal Budget Compilation and Enforcement Orders 2020.
Accordingly, the powers, activities, execution of performance of the position of the Mayor have been entrusted to the Deputy Mayor since the post of Mayor of Kurunegala Municipal Council is vacant, in terms of the Municipal Council Ordinance, with effect from the 31st of December 2022.
The gazette extraordinary states that the Deputy Mayor will discharge the duties of the Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council until the vacancy is filled.
