The Education Non-Academic Employees Union says the school system will be affected owing to incidents surrounding gas leak explosions.
Chief Secretary Ajith K Tillekeratne addressing a media briefing in Kandy said there are many schools that use gas cylinders.
He said it is poses a risk, as gas is used in places such as school laboratories, home science laboratories and school hostels.
He said almost 5,500 schools utilise gas cylinders, adding that in the event of a gas leak explosions, the school buildings, and children will be harmed.
Tillekeratne noted that chemical reactions at labs together with a gas leak explosion will create a far worse situation.
