COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Entry to the Dehiwala Zoological Garden will be free of charge for children today.
The Department of National Zoological Gardens said in addition to children, senior citizens will also be allowed to enter the Dehiwala Zoo free of charge tomorrow.
An exhibition and several other events have been organized between today and 25th of December, especially to educate the school students.
The Department of National Zoological Gardens said under the theme ‘Animals are our friends’, a number of programs have been organized.
The Department and the Central Environment Authority have jointly organized a special environmental education exhibition.
Currently, the Dehiwala Zoo houses 72 species of mammals, 65 species of birds, 31 species of reptiles, 89 species of fish, three families of amphibians and 30 species of butterflies.
The total number of animals varies from 2,500 to 3,000 due to breeding and free living colonies of birds.
The Dehiwala Zoo also supports and promotes conservation by breeding certain rare and endangered species through proper animal welfare.
