COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Former national cricketer Sachithra Senanayake who was arrested and remanded on charges of match-fixing has been granted bail.
The order was issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
Former national cricketer Sachithra Senanayake was arrested on the 7th of September after surrendering to the Special Investigations Unit of the Ministry of Sports at the Sugathadasa Sports Complex.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court last month imposed an international travel ban on former national cricketer Sachithra Senanayake.
Court imposed the ban following a request made by Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris over allegations against Sachithra Senanayake relating to match-fixing during the inaugural Lanka Premier League tournament held in 2020.
Accordingly, the court ordered the Controller-General of Immigration and Emigration to prevent Sachithra Senanayake from leaving the country.
The international travel ban is in effect for three months.
The Attorney General’s Department has given instructions to Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry to file criminal charges against Sachithra Senanayake since sufficient evidence is available.
Sachithra Senanayake has been accused of allegedly approaching two cricketers participating in the 2020 Lanka Premier League via phone calls from Dubai, to fix LPL matches.
The inaugural LPL tournament took place in November-December 2020 in Hambantota.
Sachithra Senanayake has meanwhile denied any wrongdoing.
