COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Former Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has criticized all major and minor political parties in the country for lack of internal democracy.
Former Elections Chief Deshapriya claimed that the youth and the public in general, cannot achieve their political objectives due to lack of internal democracy within parties.
Speaking at an event in Colombo, Mahinda Deshapriya said excessive powers are centered around leaders of all political parties in the country.
He said from major parties to groups that represent minorities lack democracy.
The former Elections Chief noted that nominations are given to family members of party leaders repeatedly and such candidates secure victory at elections with powers already centered around political families.
He said it is a known fact that political parties parachute candidates from various counties when elections are called.
Mahinda Deshapriya said he does not oppose family members of political party leaders entering politics but nominations should be decided based on merit.
He said most nominations are decided and finalized by high-ranking persons in Colombo.
Former Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya stressed that as long the trend continues, youth will not be able to realize the system change they’re yearning for.
