(NewsRadio); Flood warnings have been issued to low-lying areas along the Nilwala River.

The Department of Irrigation says a considerable rainfall has been reported in some of upstream and middle reach catchment areas of the Nilwala River Basin as of 11.30am.

Issuing a statement, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) at the Irrigation Department, Chaminda Sugeeshwara said by analyzing the current rainfall situation and the river water levels of hydrological stations along the Nilwala River, there is a possibility of minor flooding along the low-lying areas of the Nilwala River valley.

Accordingly, residents of Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara and Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat areas have been requested to pay high attention to rising water levels.

Engineer Chaminda Sugeeshwara also said motorists using roads in these areas should take adequate precaution.
