The Ministry of Tourism says it is hoping to develop five regional airports to attract local and international tourists.

Accordingly, domestic airports situated close to tourism zones in Sigiriya, Koggala, Ampara, Anuradhapura and Hingurakgoda will be developed.

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said the attention of the government was drawn to entice tourists to respective regions based on regional attractions.

Proposals have also been submitted to develop three more domestic airports in Nuwara Eliya, Digana and Bandarawela.

Minister Ranatunga said however since the land allocated to build the Nuwara Eliya airport has been deemed unsuitable, an assessment is to be made on a separate plot.
