Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando says the first batch of imported eggs is due to arrive in the island on Monday (27).
The Minister said the first batch of eggs has been imported by the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation.
Minister Fernando said more than two million eggs have been imported from India as part of the first batch.
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to amend the special commodity tax imposed on the import of eggs.
The special commodity tax of Rs.50 imposed on the import of an egg by the Ministry of Finance was reduced to Rs.1 by the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation with effect from the 21st of February.
The Ministry said the tax amendments will be effective for a period of three months.
