The Government Medical Officers Association says final approval pertaining to administering COVID-19 vaccines to school children above 15 years of age will be announced today.
Member of the GMOA Executive Committee Dr. Nalinda Herath said the COVID-19 vaccination programme for students can commence by next week.
Dr. Herath said a child specialist will be appointed to each education zone to monitor the process of vaccinations.
He added children with inherent illnesses will be prioritised in the vaccination drive of children and subsequently students in the 15 to 19 age category.
Dr. Herath stated a decision has not been reached pertaining to children between the ages of 12 and 15.
He claimed specialists looking into the matter are currently studying data and holding discussions pertaining to the vaccination of this age group.
