Experts have warned of potential health issues and bacterial infections while undergoing quarantine after contracting COVID-19 or during the post-COVID-19 recovery period.
Dermatologist attached to the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Janaka Akarawita, said there is a tendency for skin diseases to develop due to COVID-19, as infected individuals refrain from bathing daily or take steps to keep their scalps and skin clean.
Speaking during a media briefing, Dr. Akarawita said there is a myth amongst people that coronavirus infected individuals should refrain from bathing for 14 days.
He said coronavirus infected persons can develop patchy rashes, itchy bumps, blisters that look like chickenpox and a condition known as COVID toes.
Dr. Akarawita noted a large number of people are now receiving treatment at home or are in isolation and it is important that they take showers regularly.
He said due to sweat and other conditions, bacteria and germs are created.
Dr. Akarawita said therefore it is important to keep the skin and body clean while recovering from COVID-19.
Dr. Janaka Akarawita said even during the one to two month post-COVID recovery period, individuals will experience some complications such as skin diseases and hair loss.
He said, however, individuals will return to a normal state gradually.
Dr. Akarawita also noted that steam inhalation is a common practice among infected and non-infected persons.
He said individuals should be mindful and not use excessive heat during inhalation that is unnecessary and harmful.
Dr. Akarawita added excessively rubbing hands and the skin with soap is also unnecessary as within 20 seconds viruses are destroyed.
The Dermatologist said therefore it is important that people follow advice issued by health professionals to avoid unnecessary health complications.
