Experts have called for a practical solution to the fertiliser crisis ahead of the Maha season.
Speaking to media in Kandy, Senior Professor attached to the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, of the University of Peradeniya Buddhi Marambe said the government must take practical and analytical decisions pertaining to the fertiliser crisis.
He said officials and farmers have not been notified as to what fertiliser will be made available during the Maha season.
Prof. Marambe said they are unsure if they will receive any fertiliser at all and are therefore hesitant to go ahead with preparations.
He said some parts of the country have already commenced preparing fields for the upcoming season despite the government not making a clear announcement on fertiliser.
Prof. Marambe said experts themselves cannot advice farmers regarding fertiliser as the government has not educated them or officials regarding the matter thus far.
He requested authorities to make a clear announcement on what crops will receive specific fertiliser stocks.
