Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the present economic issues could lead to a political crisis in the country.
Speaking in Parliament, during the committee stage debate of the 2022 Budget, former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the foreign reserve crisis and other financial issues must be resolved to take the country forward.
The Leader of the United National Party noted that the public is also dismayed since Parliament has not been able to take meaningful steps to address the economic crisis.
Former Premier Wickremesinghe said the Rupee is weakening against the US Dollar and if it goes past Rs. 240, Sri Lanka’s economy will be destroyed.
The former Prime Minister questioned the government as to what steps it has taken to stabilize the Rupee.
Former Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that the youth are fleeing the country because they have no faith in the government or the current system.
UNP Leader Wickremesinghe requested the Minister of Finance to table his plans for the country during the Budget debate and obtain the support of all factions.
