The Ministry of Environment has launched a community environment protection project to conserve an ecosystem in the Malwathu Oya basin in Anuradhapura.
The Malwathu Oya is the second largest river in Sri Lanka.
The program which will be implemented under the United Nations Development Program will focus on Integrated Management of Forests, Agriculture and Tourism through a Community Based Ecosystem Approach.
Accordingly, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said this program is being implemented as a pilot project around the Malwathu Oya basin, in the Anuradhapura, Mannar, Vavuniya and Puttalam Districts.
The UNDP will provide USD 04 million in funding together with Global Environmental Facilities for the period of 2021 to 2024.
