The Opposition says the faith placed in the government by the entire nation, including the youth, has been completely broken.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said long queues seen on the roads these days are the best example of this.

MP Wickramaratne said the youth lining up to leave the country are longer than the queues to purchase essential items.

The Parliamentarian said the people are lining up to purchase gas adding however adequate stocks are not available. He said the government removed control prices due to the shortages of goods.

He warned of a dire situation if the trend continues and leads to a shortage of food.

MP Wickramaratne said thousands are lining up daily to obtain passports adding this is not only in Colombo but in the Southern Province as well.

Commenting on the daily increase in prices of essential items, the Parliamentarian said the price of a breadfruit has increased to Rs.204, a 1kg of beans increased to Rs. 350, 1kg of carrot has increased to Rs.280, a 1kg of leeks to Rs.340 and a 1kg of green chilies to Rs. 580.

He said some individuals have been forced to beg on roads due to the prevailing situation.

MP Wickramaratne said they are waiting for the 2022 Budget proposal to see how the government proposes to reduce the prices of essential commodities
