Emergency Regulations for the supply of essential food items including paddy, rice and sugar are currently in effect in the country following the issuance of a Presidential Proclamation.
The Extraordinary Gazette notification has been issued by the President in accordance with powers vested in him under the Public Security Ordinance.
According to the President’s Media Division, the regulations are aimed at preventing the concealment of stocks of paddy, rice, sugar and other essential commodities as well as charging high rates for goods.
Following the issuance of the gazette, competent authorities are vested with powers to facilitate and provide paddy, rice, sugar and other essential commodities based on government announced standard prices or based on the rates determined after receiving customs clearance.
The PMD said regulations will also grant powers to collect the loans obtained through state banks by individuals to make bulk purchases.
Major General MDSP Niwunhella has been appointed as the Commissioner General for Essential Services Coordination.
