COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva insists conducting elections at this juncture will not solve the pressing issues of the people.
Speaking during the debate on the second reading of the 2023 Budget, Minister de Silva said some factions have not fully understood the gravity of the challenges the country is facing at present.
The Minister said playing politics at this moment will only push the country backwards.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva noted that no one can guarantee a stable Parliament if an election is conducted in the present climate.
He said instead of politicizing every incident, all factions in Parliament must unite to address the issues.
The Minister urged all factions not to destabilize the country at a time when there is a noticeable increase in export income, remittances and tourist arrivals.
Minister de Silva stressed that President Ranil Wickremesinghe came forward to take up a massive challenge and have taken some unpopular decisions that no politician was willing to take.
He said now a programme is in place and therefore a certain time should be given to the resident to execute his plan.
Minister de Silva said the public will respond to the programme of the President when the next election is held.
He said until that time, all parties inside and outside of Parliament must work collectively to rebuild the country.
