COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Chairman of the National Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa says the recent request directed to the Ministry of Finance to release required funds to conduct the Local Authorities election has been sent to the Minister of Finance.
The request was made following a Supreme Court order and discussions held between the Election Commission and several factions involved in the election process.
Earlier, the Election Commission said it decided to postpone the election due to lack of funds and delay in printing ballot papers.
Accordingly, on the 10th of March, District Returning Officers issued special gazette notification declaring the new election date.
According to the gazettes, the Local Authorities Election is now scheduled to be conducted on the 25th of April.
Meanwhile, following discussions with the Election Commission, the Department of Government Printing has also requested the Finance Ministry to release necessary funds to take forward the printing of ballot papers and election related materials.
The Department has also requested additional Police protection during the printing process.
