An eight-year-old girl has succumbed to burn injuries following a fire that broke out at a residence in Wewegedarawatta, Weligama.
The fire broke out in a room and spread to the rest of the house.
Police said the child who was sleeping in the room died of burn injuries.
The victim’s grandmother and 13-year-old sister who were in another room escaped unscathed.
The Weligama Police and the Matara fire brigade unit doused the fire while the cause of the fire has not been uncovered yet.
Meanwhile, the gas cylinder, the gas stove, and other appliances in the house were not damaged.
Police said a new gas cylinder had not been purchased by the inmates of the house after the gas cylinder they had, emptied last week.
Police said investigations have revealed that the fire was not caused by a gas-related incident.
