Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health Dr. Hemali Kothalawala says the import of eggs from India will not be allowed under any circumstance due to the spread of bird flu in India.
The Director General said considering the current cost of producing an egg, an egg can be provided to consumers at less than Rs.50 and although the production cost is published monthly it has led to concerns and therefore steps will be taken to publish production cost weekly.
Kothalawala speaking at a media briefing said based on concerns related to eggs, although a decision is announced weekly, the market price of eggs is determined by the Consumer Affairs Authority.
She noted that a kilogram of maize has dropped from Rs.250 to Rs.152 and therefore the price of eggs could also decrease.
She noted that during the past six months, bird flu was spreading in India and Pakistan, and therefore the import of eggs from such countries cannot be allowed.
The Director General said there are no obstacles in importing eggs from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, and the United States.
