COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Prices of eggs have come down significantly following the announcement that the Cabinet of Ministers have granted approval to import eggs.
Prices of eggs at economic centres in Narahenpita, Welisara and Bokundara and several other areas have come down to Rs.55.
During this week’s Cabinet meeting, Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando submitted a proposal to import eggs, if prices continue to increase.
Accordingly, the Cabinet granted approval to import eggs if need arises.
However, egg producers have accused the Trade Minister of attempting to destroy the industry.
Some of the unions claimed that they only have a profit of Rs.2 per egg.
Despite the claim, the All Ceylon Egg Producers’ Association has announced that if eggs are imported, they will sell eggs in the market for a lower rate than the price the imported eggs will be sold.
Treasurer of the Association Vijaya Alwis said if imported eggs are sold for Rs.25, they will go down as low as Rs.20.
He said they only want to safeguard the industry while meeting the food demands of the people.
