The Ministry of Education says steps have been taken to redistribute Islam religion textbooks to schools from Grade 6-11.
The Ministry noted that following directives by the Ministry of Defence steps were taken to recall the Islam textbooks of Grades 6-11 that were distributed to schools in 2022.
The recall was carried out to make minor amendments to the content of the textbooks by a multi-religious expert committee comprising Islamic teachers.
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said several pages have been reprinted, bound and redistributed.
The Minister said the amendments were made to ensure there is no racial discrimination within the education system and to prevent false propaganda and extremist content from being circulated.
The statement was made by the Education Minister in Parliament today (17).
