Government Spokesman Minister Dullas Alahapperuma says the decision to remove State Minister of Education Reforms Susil Premajayantha from his post was solely taken by the President.
Minister Alahapperuma noted the matter was not discussed during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers held yesterday adding it was a decision reached by the President, with powers vested with him through the Constitution.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing in Colombo today, the Minister said it was also not discussed among the party.
Minister Alahapperuma said the President is vested with powers to remove any individual from his post, and a reason was not cited for removing MP Premajayantha from his post.
He claimed no statement was issued to imply that MP Susil Premajayantha was removed from his post as a State Minister for criticising the government.
When questioned by media on whether a situation has arisen within the government where members will not be able to criticise the government or question decisions reached by the government, Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said he does not believe there is such a situation.
The Minister said he was also informed of MP Susil Premajayantha being removed from his post as State Minister of Education Reforms, Open Universities and Distance Learning Promotion while on his way to the Cabinet decisions media briefing.
The Minister added he will have to wait to find the reason for the removal in future.
