The opposition claims the government is attempting to sell the country’s marine resources to foreign nations.
Speaking during a media briefing Parliamentarian Dilip Wedaarachchi said a large group of Indian fishermen enter the North Eastern seas and engage in various illegal activities.
He claimed thousands of Indian fishermen arrive in Lankan waters and engage in trawling.
The MP noted trawling is a method of fishing that involves towing a fishing net along the sea floor, by using two boats.
He added it destroys the sea bed, corals and other marine resources.
MP Wedaarachchi claimed the fish population in North Eastern seas had also reduced as a result of the current situation.
He stated North Eastern seas are shallow, and fish lay eggs in this area as the warmth of the sun hits the sea bed. The MP added however the sea area is being destroyed.
