Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahman says the country’s economy has been destroyed due to mass-scale financial crimes and tax scams that are unrelated to the coronavirus crisis.
Speaking to media in Colombo, MP Rahman said not having an appropriate economic policy is also a reason for the country’s economy to fall to such a state.
He noted that due to the Sugar tax scam the country lost Rs.15,000 million, the garlic scam resulted in the loss of Rs.250 million while during the importation of nano nitrogen the country lost nearly Rs.1 billion.
MP Rahman added that Sri Lanka had to pay Rs.1.3 billion for substandard fertilizer stocks which came from China although it was rejected.
He also said Pandora papers leaks revealed billions of US dollars were siphoned by corrupt politicians and their affiliates.
MP Mujibur Rahman stressed that such incidents have impacted the people and economy adversely and have no connection to the COVID-19 pandemic.
