COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Parliamentarian Kabir Hashim says economic stabilization is essential to overcome the current challenges and take forward the country.
Speaking during the second reading of the 2022 Budget in Parliament today, MP Hashim acknowledged that difficult decisions must be made and the one of the main reasons for the current crisis is the tendency of rulers to take popular decisions.
The Parliamentarian noted that loss-making entities must be restructured and said despite being a member of the opposition, he will stand for what is right.
MP Hashim also stressed on the need to restructure financial institutions and instill discipline in them.
Meanwhile, MP Kabir Hashim accused the then Mahinda Rajapaksa-led faction and the JVP of forming an alliance and sabotaging the programmes of United National Party government in 2003.
He said the then UNP government worked towards sustainable development in the country but Rajapaksa faction and the JVP rallied the people against it to win elections.
MP Kabir Hashim said proposals to restructure certain state bodies were presented 20 years ago; however certain factions played politics with it.
He said changes and reforms that were needed to be made over a period of several decades are being forced on the people at present.
The Parliamentarian said the changes are having a major impact on the people.
He said if such changes were introduced gradually, the impact on the people would’ve have been less severe.
MP Hashim of the view, regardless of political agendas, all factions should support the right decisions that will benefit the people.
He also urged the President to take correct decisions by the country and not popular decisions.
