Head of the Disaster Preparedness and Response Division of the Health Ministry Dr. Hemantha Herath has refuted media reports claiming 20% of the country’s population is infected with the Delta coronavirus variant, and that the required oxygen for patients has exceeded the capacity.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Dr. Hemantha Herath said while it was publicised that 20% of persons were infected with the Delta variant, based on a response regarding a statement by the Ministry of Health, according to samples obtained from Colombo, it was misinterpreted by certain media institutions.
Dr. Herath claimed it was reported in a manner which indicated that 20%-30% of the country’s population was infected with the Delta variant. He noted however that is not the current situation.
He also refuted media reports which claimed the required oxygen capacity had exceeded. He added no such situation has arisen.
