Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara has requested individuals seeking job opportunities to refrain from falling prey to swindlers promising employment in countries such as Poland, Romania, Israel, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and the Maldives.
The Labour Ministry stated that due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, a large number of individuals are seeking employment opportunities overseas.
The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau has received numerous complaints pertaining to fraudsters who promise employment while advertisements on social media and websites in this regard have also increased.
The Minister said prior to providing ones passport or necessary funds for the purpose of a foreign job, confirmations must be obtained to determine the legitimacy of the relevant organisation and its license.
The public can inquire into the legitimacy of employment agencies at the Bureau’s official website www.slbfe.lk or by contacting the Bureau’s 24-hour information centre hotline on 1989.
The Minister urged the public to report information of fraudsters to the Special Investigation Division of the Bureau.
