COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Ministry of Education says the distribution of school textbooks has commenced.

The distribution of textbooks for the new academic year commenced during a ceremony held in the presence of Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha and State Minister of Education Arvind Kumar at the Educational Publications Department in Maharagama.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha noted that although they spend around Rs.4.5 billion to print school textbooks which are given free of charge to children, this year they spent Rs.16 billion.

The increase in costs has been attributed to the rise in material costs as well as other production related expenses.

The Education Ministry previously had announced that it is hoping to complete the distribution of school textbooks to children in March.
