Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando has instructed relevant authorities to take immediate steps to restore the Kadugannawa area that is at risk of landslides along the Colombo-Kandy Road and to rebuild shops.
Advice was issued by the Minister during a special meeting of the Ministry of Highways yesterday.
It was proposed to stabilise areas prone to landslides, while instructions were issued to drain water down the main road in a stringent manner through suitable support structures and a drainage system.
It was also decided to develop the road with three lanes with a three-meter-wide area for viewing purposes from the slope.
In addition, attention was directed to improving the stability of the slope by introducing plants with suitable root systems and developing the section between the road and rock as an ecological conservation area.
Minister Fernando stressed as this area is a highly protected area, development work should be carried out expeditiously on the instructions of the National Building Research Organisation and the Central Environmental Authority.
