A discussion was held today between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Government Medical Officers’ Association.

During the meeting, attention was reportedly directed towards the importance of determining salaries within an employment structure based on the importance, accountability and responsibility of maintaining a correct salary structure within the state sector.

Speaking during the discussion Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella said he will take steps to present a proposal through a Cabinet Paper to direct all concerns regarding salaries to the National Salaries Commission.

The GMOA handed over proposals pertaining to salary anomalies as a result of amending salaries of selected groups and reforming salaries of the state sector by resolving the anomalies, to the Head of State.

Speaking to NewsRadio following the discussion Member of the GMOA Central Committee Dr. Prasad Ranaweera said the country is facing a dollar shortage at present while the country may face similar issues in future.

Dr. Ranaweera noted a request was made to grant permission to introduce several courses for doctors regarding revenue generation.

He said an issue has arisen pertaining to conducting research as well.

Dr. Ranaweera said the relevant Director General at the Ministry of Health is managing the research in an arbitrary manner, restricting doctors.

He added the President was informed in this regard.

Dr. Prasad Ranaweera further said there is an easy method for doctors at universities to obtain an allowance by conducting research, adding doctors also can conduct research and called for facilities to be provided to develop research.
