The Police informs that statements have been recorded from 23 individuals in relation to investigations underway into the murder of prominent businessman Dinesh Schaffter.
The investigations are being conducted by the Borella Police and the Criminal Investigation Department.
A former Sri Lankan cricket commentator is among the group that has recorded statements.
The former commentator was banned from leaving the country in relation to investigations being carried out into the murder of Schaffter.
Police said Dinesh Schaffter had lodged a complaint with the CID in the past of the former commentator having defrauded Rs.14.3 million.
The Borella Police requested Court to issue an order to telecommunication companies to submit details of the call logs of Dinesh Schaffter’s mobile phone to compile an investigative report.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said investigations are being conducted on several avenues adding that phone calls and CCTV footage are being assessed as well.
SSP Thalduwa said the post-mortem examination and the Judicial Medical Officer determined that Schaffter died of strangulation
He noted that Schaffter as a businessman had various ties to individuals, adding that all such individuals are being questioned over the incident.
However, the Police Media Spokesman said investigations revealed that no complaints have been filed against Schaffter.
SSP Thalduwa said Schaffter’s car was scanned with some evidence uncovered, adding that investigations are continuing to arrest those responsible.
Dinesh Schaffter was found bound in a vehicle inside the Borella Cemetery last evening .
He was found strangled and his arms bound.
A colleague who located him, admitted Schaffter to the Colombo National Hospital.
However, 51-year-old Dinesh Schaffter passed away while being treated at the Intensive Care Unit.
Police said investigations revealed that a struggle had taken place inside the vehicle.
The Borella Police, the Criminal Investigation Department, the Organised Crimes Division, and the Murder Investigation Division are conducting investigations to arrest those responsible for the murder.
Investigative division are currently combing through CCTV footage obtained in the surrounding area.
His remains have been placed at his residence down Flower Road, Colombo 7.
