Parliamentarian Dilan Perera says if salary anomalies of teachers and principals are not resolved by November, he will also join their struggle.
Speaking in Parliament today, MP Perera requested unions to suspend their demonstrations at time the novel coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the country.
MP Perera said teachers and principals have received the vaccine against COVID-19 through the government and now they are staging protests against the same government.
He said if they are unable to wait until the next budget, the unions should at least postpone their strikes until a majority of the country get both doses of a vaccine.
MP Perera noted that the world is experiencing the third and fourth waves with a spike in infections in China while the numbers in the United States also increasing rapidly.
He therefore requested the unions to consider the current situation and suspend their strike.
Parliamentarian Dilan Perera also questioned the benefit of receiving a salary hike, if some teachers and principals succumb after getting infected by the virus during protests.
He urged the unions to suspend the strikes since there are possibilities that protestors may contract COVID-19 and they could also spread the virus to their families.
