The Epidemiology Unit says in comparison to 2020 there has been a rise in dengue cases this year.
Several districts in the country have been identified as dengue high risk zones while a higher number of patients are reported from the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle and Hambantota districts, in comparison to other districts.
16,497 dengue patients have been reported thus far this year.
70% of dengue patients identified in the country are from the Western Province.
The National Dengue Control Unit said dengue cases are expected to rise with the prevailing South Western monsoon rains.
The Epidemiology Unit said medical advice must be sought promptly, as symptoms of both COVID-19 and dengue are similar at the initial stages.
