Health authorities say dengue cases in the country are increasing once again.
Secretary of the Government Medical Officers Forum Dr. Kamal A Perera said the number of hospital admissions with dengue fever has seen a gradual increase in recent days.
Dr. Perera said with the increase in rainfall, dengue mosquitoes have increased.
He therefore requested the public to destroy all mosquito breeding grounds within their surroundings.
Dr. Kamal A Perera said the focus on dengue had reduced during the past one and a half years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said due to lack of resources, health authorities have also struggled to conduct education activities on dengue and conduct programmes to destroy mosquito breeding grounds.
Dr. Kamal A Perera noted that there are several similarities in symptoms of COVID-19 and dengue fever and said disregarding early signs could be fatal.
He therefore encouraged people to maintain a clean environment and prevent dengue cases from rising.
