COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Department of Motor Traffic has confirmed it will introduce the demerit points system for the traffic offenses from next month.
The Commissioner-General of Motor Traffic, Nishantha Weerasinghe said the demerit points system is being introduced in an attempt to reduce the number of motor accidents in the country.
The system is expected to be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval.
According to the proposed system, demerit points will be awarded for 32 traffic offences.
If a driver accumulates 20 demerit points, then the driver license of the concerned individual will be suspended for a period of one year.
The Commissioner-General said 10 points will be added if an individual flees a scene after a causing a road accident while eight points for an individual driving in excess of 150 km/h.
He said the proposed system will be published once the approval is received.
