The government has made a special request from the general public to get vaccinated at a time the Delta coronavirus variant is spreading rapidly in the country.
Sri Lanka commenced the vaccination drive in January and has been using AstraZeneca Covishield, Sputnik V, Sinopharm, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
Vaccination centres are operating across the country at present with those above age 30 years given vaccine doses against COVID-19.
Issuing a statement, the Government Information Department has said the new strain has caused infections rates and deaths to rise steeply across the globe.
Accordingly, citizens have been requested to obtain the vaccine promptly.
Meanwhile, citizens have also been urged to leave their houses only for essential work.
The government has also requested the public to avoid ceremonies such as weddings and funerals and also other events. Furthermore, citizens must always wear a face mask when in public.
The public has also been encouraged to wash hands on a regular basis and to maintain a distance of one metre between two individuals.
The government has urged the public to follow the guidelines to minimise the infection rates and save valuable lives.
