With concerns surrounding the rapid spread of the Delta coronavirus variant in the country, health authorities have recommended wearing two masks while remaining within air-conditioned spaces and in indoor settings.
Consultant Virologist Dr. Nadeeka Janage attached to the Medical Research Institute said double masking will help effectively tackle the highly transmissible Delta variant.
Speaking during a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau today, Dr. Nadeeka Janage also recommended individuals to maintain a distance of two metres within enclosed spaces.
Dr. Janage noted that experts still believe the Delta coronavirus variant is not an airborne phenomenon but the primary way it spreads is through droplets or aerosols of an infected individual.
He added it is evident that the Delta coronavirus variant spreads rapidly within indoor settings.
Dr. Nadeeka Janage noted that the current guidelines including mask and social distancing regulations are adequate to contain the spread of the virus.
He said an individual infected with the Delta variant will make many more copies of the virus than other strains and therefore the virus spreads faster.
Dr. Janage stressed that by adhering to guidelines issued by health authorities, the public can help contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
