Researchers of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura have determined that the Delta variant was 95.8% responsible for COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka.

The study was carried out by researchers including Prof. Neelika Malavige and Dr. Chandima Jeewandara of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Department of Immunology Molecular and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Dr. Jeewandara said after investigating the prevalence of different SARS-CoV-2 variants in different provinces in Sri Lanka researchers found that the Delta variant was responsible for a majority of infections in Sri Lanka.

The researchers claim that it is important to determine the prevalence of different SARS-CoV-2 variants in different provinces in Sri Lanka, to take relevant policy decisions regarding the control of COVID-19.

The researchers said the Delta variant was prevalent between 84% to 100% in different provinces.
