COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The National Election Commission is scheduled to meet today to decide on whether to conduct the Local Authorities Election on the 9th of May as planned.
Chairman of the Commission Nimal Punchihewa said the members will take decision as to whether or not the election can be held on the 9th of March as scheduled.
Meanwhile, Nimal Punchihewa noted that an unanimous decision has already been taken by the Commission and its members to conduct the postponed Local Authorities Election.
He said the election was officially declared at a media briefing held recently with the participation of all five members.
Nimal Punchihewa added that all five members have already signed necessary gazette notifications pertaining to the Local Authorities Election.
Meanwhile, yesterday, President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament said the Local Authorities Election day has not been announced thus far.
The President said the decision on the Election Day must be taken by the National Election Commission at a meeting with the participation of at least three members.
The Head of State said according to the press release, the election date has been decided at a meeting of the Commission without the required quorum.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe added that the Election Commission must first declare the election date legitimately.
The Head of State noted that even if the election date is announced, the Treasury does not have the necessary funds for an election at this juncture.
