The Petroleum General Employees Union says the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has neglected its responsibility of ensuring the quality of fuel.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Chairman of the Union Ashoka Ranwala said the people’s trust and reputation of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation was severely affected as a result. Ranwala noted the Union is ready to discuss issues pertaining to the shortage of fuel.

He claimed there is a severe fuel shortage across the island at present.

He said the main responsibility of the CPC and the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited is to provide a continuous supply of quality fuel to the public.

Ranwala said multinational companies are attempting to seize the petroleum monopoly during these uncertain times.

He said the Chairman of the CPC and the Minister of Energy are responsible for safeguarding the CPC and CPSTL under the provisions of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Act No.28 of 1961.

Ranwala urged both the Minister and Chairman to refrain from making amendments to the Petroleum Corporation Act in order to ensure the survival of the CPC.

He said the public is burdened due to fuel shortages adding fuel must be distributed in a stringent manner if stocks are available.
