The Ministry of Health says Vitamin C, D and Zinc can be used to boost immunity against COVID-19.

Senior Professor of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo and Specialist in General Medicine Dr. Priyadarshani Galappatthy said individuals will not suffer any side effects if taken frequently in the recommended dose.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau Dr. Galappatthy added therefore these vitamins are provided to patients and are recommended.

She said however only Paracetamol can be recommended for persons suffering from fever and body aches.

Dr. Galappatthy noted non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Diclofenac and Mefenamic acid are not recommended for patients suffering from fever and body aches as it may cause side effects.

She requested the public to refrain from using medicine sold at excessive rates, by claiming protection against the coronavirus.

Meanwhile Dr. Priyadarshani Galappatthy said persons receiving treatment for chronic illnesses can obtain the COVID-19 vaccine adding that such individuals must obtain the vaccine.

She said medicines used by persons with chronic illnesses will not affect the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.

Dr. Priyadarshani Galappatthy noted however steroids will have a bearing on immunity boosting medicines and vaccines. She said such persons will not have the same immunity as others after taking a vaccine.

Dr. Galappatthy said therefore they advise persons who take steroids to reduce their dosage and obtain a COVID-19 vaccine.
