Acting Director of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Samitha Ginige says there is a clear drop in the number of coronavirus cases and related deaths.
Addressing a media briefing in Colombo today Dr. Ginige said public support is essential in maintaining the prevalent situation.
He said of the hospitalisations in the country only 6 percent have been reported as COVID positive patients, while other patients are being treated for non-COVID related illnesses.
Dr. Ginige said this indicates that the virus has been relatively controlled.
He noted that with the increase in community transmission of cases deaths also rise adding that with a drop in infections, virus-deaths have also reduced simultaneously with between 20-30 fatalities reported in comparison to the 200 the previous day.
When questioned of plans to import the drug introduced to combat COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, Dr. Samitha Ginige said the drug is still in research level adding that following approval of the World Health Organization they will determine its use in the country.
