Professor of Pharmacology of the University of Colombo Priyadarshani Galappatthy says antibiotics should be consumed only on medical recommendations.
Prof. Galappatthy speaking at a media briefing today said antibiotics are not required to treat coronavirus adding that viruses rarely respond to antibiotics.
Prof. Galappatthy claimed antibiotics kill good bacteria in the body adding that it could lead to harmful bacteria’s causing illness.
She also stated that side effects can be experienced such as allergies, highlighting that some severe reactions even lead to death.
Prof. Galappatthy added unnecessary antibiotic intake is not recommended and should only be taken on a doctor’s recommendation.
