Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella says attention is being directed to commencing vaccinations of children between the ages of 12-18 at the earliest.
The Minister said schools have closed from time to time during the past one and a half years owing to the coronavirus pandemic, adding that in order to reopen schools vaccinations of school children must commence.
The Health Minister speaking at a discussion via Zoom at the Health Ministry today said several international organisations, including the World Health Organisation, have detailed several criteria for the vaccination of children.
Minister Rambukwella added with the commencement of the vaccination of school children, students from Grade 7 to 13 will be vaccinated first.
It is expected that schools will be able to reopen following the completion of the vaccination of school children as non-academic staff including teachers have been fully vaccinated as of now.
The Minister added the Ministry intends on vaccinating around two million children under the first phase.
The Health Minister claimed the first dose of a COVID vaccine has been administered to 34% and 12% in the 20-29 year age group have been fully vaccinated thus far.
