The Government Medical Officers Association warns that the country will have to enter another lockdown if steps are not taken to face a possible fifth wave of the coronavirus and other COVID-virus variants that may emerge.
Issuing a statement the GMOA said more severe variants opposed to the strains prevalent at present, could break out in future.
The GMOA also explained the Basic Reproduction Number or R0 that indicated the average number of secondary infections which can be caused by a COVID-patient.
The statement said 2.3-2.7 indicates the Wuhan variant, 4-5 the Alpha variant and the Delta variant that is currently spreading in Sri Lanka between 5-8.
The GMOA added failure to understand this risk will result in the country having to repeatedly enter lockdowns and face graver economic situations in future.
