Schools across the island will be re-opened under four stages after the travel restrictions are lifted.
The Ministry of Education has announced that under the first stage, 3,884 schools conducting classes for Grade 1-5 students will be opened.
Speaking during a media briefing held at the Department of Government Information, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera said since children under the age of 12 are not required to be vaccinated, they have decided to reopen classes for Grade 1-5 students under the first stage.
Prof. Perera said vaccination of children between the ages of 12 and 16 and 19 will be carried out based on advice of specialists.
He said all decisions pertaining to vaccination and reopening schools are taken by the expert committee appointed with members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and officials of the Ministries of Health and Education.
Prof. Kapila Perera noted next week, they will inquire into the preparation to re-open schools from, provincial, district and zonal education and health directors..
He said taking into consideration their inputs, on the advice of the Health Ministry, the Ministry of Education will issue recommendations announcing dates to re-open schools.
