The Ministry of Education has announced that the Pfizer vaccine will be administered to students sitting the 2021 GCE Advanced Level Examination for the first and second shy, from all schools in the Colombo zone, from Friday, the 15th of October.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau today, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Education LMD Dharmasena said children from schools with a large number of students will be vaccinated at the school premises.
Students from schools with a low number of students will be directed to a selected school to be vaccinated.
Dharmasena urged students to bring their National Identity Card and requested them to inquire with their respective principals as to the location of the vaccination centre.
He said further details on relevant vaccination centres will be published on the official websites of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.
He requested parents and students to refer to these sites.
Dharmasena urged all students to obtain the vaccine without any fear, considering it to be a life saving method, citing that the government has spent a large sum on importing vaccine doses.
Furthermore, he said the vaccination programme for students sitting the 2021 Advanced Level Exam for the first and second shy, from schools in other districts, will commence after schools are reopened under the first phase on the 21st of October.
When questioned by media pertaining to the current situation of the teachers’ and principals’ trade union struggle, Dharmasena said the government will never offend teachers.
He said they too received education adding teachers are part of a very intelligent group who are working together with the future generations.
Dharmasena said they expected a favourable answer today adding however they look forward to a positive answer in future taking into consideration the wellbeing of students.
